AGRICULTURAL WORKERS

In 1841 it is recorded that at least 36 people were Agricultural Labourers and more seasonal workers may have been employed at harvest time. Often wives and children would have carried out many agricultural jobs but their roles are not recorded. This work would have been hard and poorly paid in most cases housing may have been tied to the labourers employment with no security of tenancy.  â€‹

In the 1830s T L Richardson recorded the ‘Agricultural Labourers Standard of Living in Lincolnshire’ earnings be on average 10 shillings a week (50p). This would have resulted in many workers having to find additional income.

Those recorded as Farmers would have owned land or have taken out tenancies and been employers of many local villagers.  By the early 1800’s few if any unenclosed land remained so the ownership of farms would have been by inheritance or agreement with local Landed Gentry. These Farmers would have been better educated possess, more technical knowledge and be slightly better off financially than many other village residents.
